Best Dressed Best Dressed 2012: Top 50

Bollywood served up some stylish competition to their international counterparts this year, commanding red carpets across the country and beyond borders in creations by the world’s top designers.
A host of awards ceremonies in the beginning of the year gave us a quite a few looks that rivalled the Academy Awards red carpet. Sridevi in her printed Elie Saab, Tarina Patel in Marchesa, Asin Thottumkal in Stella McCartney, Shahzahn Padamsee in Gavin Miguel and Deepika Padukone in Gauri and Nainika set the bar pretty high early on in the year.
At the Cannes Film Festival, the Bollywood contingent lived up to the hype around their red carpet choices. Sonam Kapoor had her own shoes to fill after her unforgettable Cannes debut last year in a sheer Jean Paul Gaultier gown. She repeated the feat this time around in a black Gothic gown by Alexander McQueen, then made it two for two with a billowing red velvet Dolce & Gabbana.
The Cannes red carpet was also one of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s first public appearances post pregnancy. She chose a blue Elie Saab for her red carpet return.
Singapore got a firsthand view of Bollywood at the 2012 IIFA Awards. The 3-day event introduced quite a few contenders for our list. Kalki Koechlin chose a simple but arresting red Victoria Beckham, Aditi Rao Hydari opted for volume in a Gauri and Nainika creation, Priyanka Chopra’s sheer and floral Dolce and Gabbana was straight out of a fairytale, and Bipasha Basu’s red Gauri and Nainika was her best look of the year.
At the Vogue Beauty Awards, Deepika Padukone caused jaws to drop in a Dolce & Gabbana outfit that featured a black top and gold sequinned skirt. Kajol, who won the Timeless Beauty award chose a curve-enhancing Ayesha Depala embroidered dress for the event, Nargis Fakhri pouted at the paparazzi in a Roberto Cavalli dress while Poorna Jagannathan surprised us in a soft, feminine Bibhu Mohapatra.
Padukone was the red carpet highlight at the GQ Men of the Year awards too, dressed to stun in a red lace Gaurav Gupta gown. Esha Gupta, Shibani Dandekar and Sarah Jane Dias picked frosty shades of silver by indigenous talent for the awards – Gupta in Rohit Gandhi + Rahul Khanna, Dandekar in Sailex and Dias in AM:PM.
